Giotto di Bondone
Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels and Saints (The "Ognissanti Maestà")

Florence, 1306-10
Tempera on wood
Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy

The elaborate throne, the worshippers, the Virgin Mary's blue mantle ,and the blessing that the child confers on the viewer are all highly traditional, but Giotto follows the new practice of putting the child in a true child's garment, not one expressive of his divine dignity.
